Beginner Runner Tips for Boosting Endurance

Beginner Runner Tips for Boosting Endurance

When you first start running, it is not easy to go very fast or for long distances. Once you have become comfortable with shorter runs, you may find it daunting to try to improve in certain areas, such as speed and endurance. Perhaps you want to train for a half marathon, but aren’t sure where to begin, and can’t imagine running that far. At 33Fuel, we feel your pain. As endurance athletes, we started right where you are. That is why we created our running supplements for endurance! Our chia energy gels give you the endurance you need to keep on running. Besides supplementing your diet with our natural energy gels, here are some ways you can work to improve your running endurance.

Take it one step at a time

When you are training to increase your endurance, it can be overwhelming to focus on your larger running goals. If you want to eventually run a half marathon, it can be daunting to think about running such a long distance when you are only comfortable with short distances so far. Therefore, it is better to focus on making your short term goals. It takes a degree of patience, but when you’re working on endurance, start by taking one more step than you did your previous run. You could also run for one minute longer, or go one street further. Whatever way you choose to measure it, a series of small steps will get you where you want to be.

Pace yourself

It can be tempting to try to push too hard when you first start training. You want to see improvements as quickly as possible, so you should put maximum effort in each time, right? Wrong! This is not a sustainable way to train. If you find that you are exhausted after every run, it is time to slow your pace. Going just 30 seconds slower per mile can put you at an easier, more maintainable pace.

Run shorter distances more frequently

It may seem counterintuitive, but running shorter distances more frequently helps you build endurance. In order to improve your running in general, it is more important to run more often than it is to run longer distances. As you get better at running, your stamina will improve as well.

Take rest days

You may believe that you can skip your rest day. After all, how important is it? The truth is, it is very important. Not only should you take the day off from running on your rest day, you should abstain from other workouts as well, such as weightlifting or yoga. Relax, rejuvenate, and allow your muscles to fully heal at least once a week.
